The United Nations -UN coordination officer Alexander Mancham in Seychelles has disclosed that its newly opened liaison office in the country is to help strengthen and synergize the relationship between the different agencies and to assess and collaborate on matters whenever the need arises, he said.

The launch of the new liaison office which is expected to become operational next week will be working closely with the foreign affairs ministry, and other ministries, to ensure that the coordination efforts of the office work well say the UN resident coordinator, Christine Umutoni, who is based in Mauritius.

Umutoni who spoke to reporters after meeting with President Wavel Ramkalawan at State House said, Mancham will be the only person working in the office although with the possibilities of having other people working, maybe in an internship capacity, in the near future.

The United Nations office would be assisting about 20 agencies on many different frontiers explained Mancham, adding further that only four of them are physically based in the country and that the remaining 16 only have Seychelles under their portfolio.

He also said that there are a lot of opportunities inherent in the opening of the office to be capitalized on and a lot of work to be done and that it’s certainly a very exciting development.

Seychelles, an archipelago in the western Indian Ocean, has been a member of the UN since June 1976.
