A member of the UN Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan, Barney Afako, has commenced a five-day visit to the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The visit follows South Sudan’s recent passage of laws to establish the Commission for Truth, Reconciliation and Healing, and the Reparation Authority, marking progress in addressing human rights violations.
Afako will meet with AU officials, the Peace and Security Council, and other representatives, aiming to mobilize support for the peace process.
The commission will share its findings on South Sudan’s human rights obligations and the implementation of transitional justice, calling for the urgent establishment of the hybrid court and improvements in the domestic justice system.
Established in 2016, the commission is tasked with investigating human rights violations and providing recommendations to prevent further deterioration in South Sudan.
