Ghana’s fastest Paralympian, Raphael Botsyo Nkegbe who recently indicated that he eyes a gold medal, at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan in an interview with BBC said he is carrying the hope of over 5million disabled Ghanaians.
The Paralympian in a BBC Sport Africa video interview said he is the Hero of over 5million disabled persons in Ghana and they look up to him as a beacon of hope.
Botsyo Nkegbe who holds the African record for the 100m in the T54 classification and ranks 6th in the world said his motivation comes from the fact that 5 million disabled persons in Ghana look up to him.
Nkegbe who first featured on the global stage in the 2004 Athens games said though he could not win any medal described his experience as a dream come true.
He qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic games after winning the T54 World Wheelchair 100m race with a new personal best of 14.22s at the Desert Challenge Games in the USA earlier this year.
The Ghanaian Paralympic heroic achievement also earned him recognition by one of Ghana’s financial institution, Opportunity International which donated to him an undisclosed amount of money after his qualification at the Desert Challenge Games in USA.
CEO of Opportunity International’, Kwame Owusu-Boateng described Botsyo’s participation in tournaments as one that has not only brought honour to the nation but also inspires persons living with disabilities to spur them on to achieve their dreams despite being handicapped.
On his part, the three-time Paralympian acknowledged the bank for supporting him and stated that the funds will go a long way to help people living with disabilities in the country.
The Ghanaian three-time Paralympian while receiving the cash donation earlier this year said he wants to be remembered for giving back to the society as well as giving back to other physically challenge and those who want to be in the para-sports and achieve something for their life.
Botsyo is expected to participate in the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai on 7-15 November 2019.
