Ahead of the official declaration of John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress as winner of the December 7 presidential polls, there are already wide celebrations ongoing in Ghana among opposition supporters.
The celebration is double-barreled, as the election also produced the country’s first female vice-president in Professor Naana Opoku-Agyemang.
Wearing the opposition party’s white, green, red and black colours, women and young people danced to music and trumpet blasts on the streets and at the party’s national headquarters.
Their jubilation began after the sitting Vice President and presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Mahamudu Bawumia, on Sunday conceded.
Ahead of the official announcement, Bawumia told reporters that he respects the decision of Ghanaians to vote for change and has called Mahama to congratulate him as president-elect of the Republic of Ghana.
Mahama secured 56.3 per cent of the vote, just as his party, the NDC, also won the majority in parliament, while Bawumia received 41.3 per cent of the votes.
