Ghana Civil Society Groups Raise Alarm Over Alleged Vote Buying

Three prominent civil society organisations in Ghana have raised concerns about alleged vote-buying ahead of the 2024 elections.

The Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) and the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) have accused both the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of engaging in vote-buying, capable of undermining the credibility of the upcoming elections.

In a statement dated December 3rd, 2024, the organizations highlighted that vote-buying violates Sections 33 and 34 of the Representation of the People Law, 1992, which prohibit bribery and treating during elections.

Specific allegations included the distribution of chickens, money and bags of rice in the Okaikoi South constituency on Sunday, and distribution of oil and bags of rice in Ayawaso West Wuogon on November 27th. Also, during the special voting on Monday, food packs were reportedly given to voters in Ayawaso West Wuogon.

The three CSOs called on law enforcement agencies to investigate the allegations and take legal action against those involved.
