The death of Agnes Tirop, Kenyan’s record-breaking long-distance runner found stabbed in her home has sparked calls by the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in Kenya to call on the government to declare femicide and gender-based violence a national disaster in the East African country.
According to the chairperson of the body of female lawyers Nancy Ikilu, Kenyans have continued to wake up daily to news of women killed by their spouses and partners and this she said FIDA-Kenya is concerned over the safety and security of women and girls.
She also opined that women’s rights are human rights and no woman deserves to be killed no matter the circumstances and urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the National Police Service to expedite investigations and bring the perpetrators to account.
An official report, however, has it that Police have arrested Ibrahim Rotich the husband of the record-breaking long-distance runner in the coastal city of Mombasa, and will be made to face charges once investigations are completed.
