UN Secretary-General, Voices Concerns Over Escalation of Violence in Ethiopia

A statement from the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the United Nations -UN, Stéphane Dujarric, has indicated the concerns of Antonio Guterres over the escalation of violence in Ethiopia.

The statement also stated that the UN Secretary-General is worried about the recent declaration of the state of emergency in that country which he said will affect the stability of Ethiopia, with its wider region being at stake.

Guterres who in the statement by his spokesperson reiterated his call for an immediate cessation of hostilities, unrestricted humanitarian access to deliver urgent life-saving assistance, and inclusive national dialogue to resolve the crisis and create the foundation for peace and stability throughout the country.

The Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, On Twitter, stated that the possible consequences of a spiraling conflict on the country and the region are frightening to contemplate, but that it’s not too late to choose dialogue, to silence the guns she added.

Thousands are feared killed in the north, amidst allegations of widespread human rights abuses on all sides, with more than two million forced to flee their homes.

Over the past few months, humanitarian needs have grown, amid killings, looting, and destruction of health centers and farming infrastructure, including irrigation systems that are vital to the production effort.

Acute food insecurity is affecting up to 7 million people throughout Ethiopia.
