Senegal’s Constitutional Council has officially declared the final results of the snap legislative elections held this month, confirming a sweeping victory for the ruling Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity party.
Led by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, PASTEF secured 130 of the 165 parliamentary seats, gaining a strong majority in the National Assembly. In the final results from the November 17 elections, the coalition led by former President Macky Sall won 16 seats.
Also, former Prime Minister Amadou Ba’s coalition claimed seven, while Dakar Mayor Barthelemy Dias’ coalition won three seats. Several smaller and independent groups also earned a seat each.
A total of 41 parties and coalitions contested in the elections, with about 3.6 million valid votes cast out of 7.3 million registered voters, resulting in a voter turnout of 49.51 per cent.
Following the election, President Faye is expected to issue a decree to set the date for the first session of the newly elected National Assembly. The elections were called after Faye, aiming to ease tensions between the executive and legislature, dissolved the opposition-led National Assembly in September.
