Ivory Coast Goes Tough On Corruption

Date:

The head of the Ministry for the Promotion of Good Governance, Capacity Building and the Fight against Corruption Zoro Epiphane Ballo have described as particularly worrisome the height of corruption among the Police and gendarmerie who take bribes from food vendors on the streets of Côte d’Ivoire.

Ballo while speaking during the launch of several operations against corruption in the public services said the slogan of the government’s campaign “beware of fraud, beware of racketeering, the state sees you” added that corruption has become a major challenge to good governance, sustainable growth, peace, and development.

He described the heightening corrupt practices of police, gendarmerie as well as other sectors that include education, health and justice in the act of bribery and racketeering as the responsible factors affecting the rise in the prices of consumer products which Ivorians have complained about.

The perception of corruption index of Côte d’Ivoire which has not improved significantly ranks 104th out of 180 countries in the Corruption Perception Index of Transparency International, the world’s leading non-governmental anti-corruption organization.

Mr. Ballo however said that several sectors of the public service are already targeted by the operations of his agency to collect evidence of corruption.
