Authorities in South Africa said Monday that firefighters in the Garden Route region of the Western Cape are continuing efforts to bring a wildfire in the Little Karoo under control.
Last week, 10 active wildfires raged in the region and most have been contained, including one in Jongensfontein in the Hessequa Municipality.
However, the fire in the Swartberg Pass, near Oudtshoorn, continues to burn in inaccessible mountainous areas. Authorities say infrastructure remains safe under the current conditions.
Meanwhile, fire-fighting organisation, Working on Fire, says the past winter fire season in the Western Cape has been the most devastating in nine years, with fires having claimed 34 lives thus far.
The organisation says the intensity of the season was being driven by the growing impacts of climate change, resulting in more frequent and severe wildfires. It stressed the need an urgent need for climate action.
