A full-scale attack coordinated by the Ethiopian army has been launched on all fronts against forces from the northern Tigray region, the rebels say.
A senior rebel source from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), Getachew Reda said the government was using artillery, tanks, jets, and drones in an attempt to “reinvade” the region.
According to the TPLF spokesman, he said that there was active fighting today on at least three fronts in the Amhara region against the troops of the Ethiopian army and Amhara regional militias.
However, spokeswoman for the Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Billene Seyoum had said in an interview when questioned about the escalating conflict but did not directly respond to questions about the offensive only said that the government “has a responsibility to protect its citizens in all parts of the country from any acts of terrorism.
Getachew on the other hand said the offensive was not altogether surprising, because of a recent escalation of force by the government, including airstrikes that began late last week on TPLF forces in the Amhara region.
In a recent tweet where he had mentioned that there was fighting in the Amhara-region towns of Wegeltena, Geregera, Wurgessa, and Haro Getachew said that the TPLF forces will definitely stand their ground and more.
Ethiopia’s prime minister had in August said that the TPLF), a political party that has controlled the country for three decades and has been fighting the government for the past nine months, is being aided by foreign hands called on citizens who are of age to join the Defence Forces, Special Forces and militias and show your patriotism to dislodge the rebels from the Tigray region from occupying neighboring areas and down a key highway leading to the capital, Addis Ababa.
