African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat Denies Fake News on Social Media

Date:

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission -AUC Moussa Faki Mahamat, has described as fake news the purported false report attributed to him circulating on the social media claiming that he had called for a temporary relocation of the Commission and its staff from Ethiopia.

Mahamat in a statement through his spokesperson Ebba Kalondo stated that he only learnt of the existence of a fake official internal memo which he said has no basis in fact nor form and does not originate from him.

The African Union Commission Chairperson had on 3 November said he is following with deep concern the escalation of military confrontation in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, the full respect for the life and property of civilians, as well as state infrastructure.

The Chairperson reiterates the African Union’s continued commitment to work with the parties in support of a consensual political process.

To this end, the Chairperson calls on the parties to engage with the AU High Representative for the Horn of Africa, former Nigerian President H.E Olusegun Obasanjo.
